Renewable Energy Certificates
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) can be created by owners of solar water heaters and heat pumps because they are not contributing to the greenhouse gas emissions. These envoronmental products are created under the Federal Government Mandatory Renewable Energy Act which encourages the uptake of renewable energy.

NEWS UPDATE:
CLOSURE OF THE NATIONAL RAINWATER AND GREYWATER INITIATIVE - HOUSEHOLD
Australian Government announced as at the 10 May 2011 it will no longer be providing rebates fro rainater tanks or greywater systems under the National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative (NRGI). Rainwater tanks or greywater systems purchased after 10 May 2011 will not be elligible for an Australian Government rebate.
Householders may still apply for a rebate for rainwater tanks or greywater systems that were purchased on or before 10 May 2011. However all applications must be received by Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities by 10 Novermber 2011.
Applications will not be accepted after this time. Customers are asked to use the updated NRGI Guidelines and Application form availble on the departments's Website.

National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative
The Federal Government is providing :
- Grants to surf life saving clubs of up to $10,000 to install a rainwater tanks or undertake a larger water saving project.
Grants for surf life saving clubs to save water
The minister for climate and Water announced on the 1st of October 2008 that the Australian Government will make available grants of up to $10,000 to surf life saving clubs to install water saving and efficiency devices on club premises.
Activities eligible for funding include installion of new rainwater tanks connected to club premises so that they can be used for toilet flushing an/or laundry use. Clubs can claim funding for plumbing, guttering, down pipes and other materials provided these are for the new tank.
Funding will also be considered for other water efficient or water saving devices such as taps, toilet, urinals and showers. Showers and urinals must bave a three star rating under the Water Efficiency labelling and Standasrds scheme and toilets and taps must have a four star rating.
