Renewable Energy Certificates
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) can be created by owners of solar water heaters and heat pumps because they are not contributing to the greenhouse gas emissions. These envoronmental products are created under the Federal Government Mandatory Renewable Energy Act which encourages the uptake of renewable energy.

Water for the future

National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative
As part of the $12.9 billion Water for the Future plan, the Government is delivering the $250 million National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative to help people use water wisely in their everyday lives.
The Federal Government is providing :
- Rebates of up to $500 for households that install rainwater tanks or greywater systems.
- Grants to surf life saving clubs of up to $10,000 to install a rainwater tanks or undertake a larger water saving project.
Rebates for households to install rainwater tanks or greywater systems
On 30 January 2009 , the Minister for Climate Change and Water announced that the Australian Government is offering rebates of up to $500 to household for either;
- The purchase and installation of a new rainwater tank which is connected for internal re-use of the water for toilet and/or laundry use; or
- The purchase and installationof a permanent greywater treatment system.
A $400 rebate is available for a 2,000 to 3,999-litre tank and a $500 rebate is available for a tanks greater than 4,000 litres.

Grants for surf life saving clubs to save water
The minister for climate and Water announced on the 1st of October 2008 that the Australian Government will make available grants of up to $10,000 to surf life saving clubs to install water saving and efficiency devices on club premises.
Activities eligible for funding include installion of new rainwater tanks connected to club premises so that they can be used for toilet flushing an/or laundry use. Clubs can claim funding for plumbing, guttering, down pipes and other materials provided these are for the new tank.
Funding will also be considered for other water efficient or water saving devices such as taps, toilet, urinals and showers. Showers and urinals must bave a three star rating under the Water Efficiency labelling and Standasrds scheme and toilets and taps must have a four star rating.
