Building Industry News & Reports:

HIA - September, 2009 issue.

Queensland homes use electric hot water systems that account for 35% of household energy costs. As hot water costs can be reduce by an average of 85% with solar hot water systems, it is enevitable that the residential sector will continue to access available incentives and  adopt the new technology.

Queensland residents alone have installed close to 4,000 units. HIA predicts that with a million homes still requiring solar hot water in Queensland, the industry has the potential to create approximately 32,000 job over the next ten years.

NEW BUILDING CODE CHANGES   - how do they effect you !

Government ot introduce changes;  program is to be  phased in with regard to existing electric hot water systems. When electric systems break down, they will have to be replaced with either a solar hot water system, gas hot water system, heat pump or continuous flow system.

A good reason to consider changing now to an alternative system while incentives are in place to save on installation costs.

Why Solar Hot Water !!

Why is there a big push from all levels of Government for Solar Hot Water?

  • Infracture cost
  • Energy demand and supply (off peak electricity)
  • Hot water energy use
  • Easiest solution for governments
  • shifts the cost to the end consumer
  • Environmental Benefits

AUST. GOVT SOLAR HOT WATER REBATE PROGRAMME

Eligible systems

To be eligible for the rebate, a hot water system must:

  • replace an electric storage hot water system with a solar or heat pump hot water system that is eligible for at least 20 Renewable Energy Certificates (REC's) at the time of purchase at the installation
  • be verified by a registered agent
  • be installed by a qualified plumber have a warranty of at least five years

Eligible households

The dwelling where the hot water system is installed must be a principal place of residence. As of February 2009, there is no cap on household income.

Types of Solar Hot Water Systems

There are two main types  of collector panels for solar water heating systems: flat plate panels and evacuated tupe panels. Both are positioned on your roof.

FLAT PLATE COLLECTOR

A flat plate collector looks similar to a skylight and transfers the heat from the sun into the water or heat transfer flued flowing throung the panel. A typical house would have one to three panels, covering between 2m2 to 6m2 .

EVACUATED TUBE PANEL COLLECTOR

An evacuated tube panel is made of a series of glass tubes between 1.5m and 2m wide, that slope lengthwise up and down the roof. Evacuated tubes tend to be more efficient at low temperatures. The design incorporates tubes that consist of 2 layers of glass with a vacuum layer between them. The vacuum acts like a thermos flask, retaining up to 97% of thermal energy.

TOO COSTLY ?

  • The only appliance in the house that pays for itself!
  • Most economic renewable energy option for the home
  • Environmentally, replacing an electric hot water with solar is as good as taking your car off  the road!
  • A SHW unit also adds value to your home!

IS IT A GOOD INVESTMENT ?

1.      A Solar system will always pay back the difference in cost over the life of the system.

2.    How quickly they pay back the difference depends on;

  • location
  • the type of system it is replacing
  • the type of system being used; and
  • the hot water usage of the customer

Clean. Green. Efficient. Evacuated Tube Technology

Evacuated Tube Technology delivers significantly better performance than traditional absorbers on the market today.

Evacuated tube technology has been used in Europe for many years and is more 40% efficient in cooler climate than the standard flat plate technology, especially in the Winter months when thermal energy is at its lowest, quality system that providing the best all year round performance. Apricus systems installed in canada operate at minus 40 degrees Celsius!

WE RECOMMEND, SUPPLY & INSTALL - APRICUS SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEMS

APRICUS EVACUATED TUBES & FLAT PANEL SOLAR COLLECTOR COMPARISON

  • Evacuated tubes (ET) work in all seasons and are more efficient in extreme temperatures
  • An Apricus solar collector is not soley dependent on direct sunlight, and works in all weather conditions where there is direct or diffused sunlight.
  • Easier installation and assembly - no cranes required, resulting in lower labour costs . Flexible installation options.
  • EVACUATED TUBES provide better overall solar contribution in Autumn, Winter & Spring
  • Easy to maintain!  In the event of a damaged tube(s) simply remove and replace the tube. No fuss, Low cost.
  • Lower requirements on roof and fixing systems for wind loads. Flat plate collectors lift with the wind, Apricus evacuated tube solar collectors have a gap between the tubes which greatly reduces wind load.
  • As hot water temperature demand increases Evacuated tubes outperform flat plate collectors  (Up to 40% more efficient )
  • FP has convection, conduction & radiation losses - ET has only minimal radiation loss and almost zero convective heat loss, resulting superior performance in cold weather and at higher output temperatures.
  • ET can be positioned more favourable towards the sun than FP collectors and have a greater range of installation flexibility (wall, flat roof, pitched roof, pole mounted.
  • Apricus collectors passively track the sun due to the round shape of the tubes, ensuring greater solar performance for longer every day. The result is more stable heat output from mid morning to mid afternoon.
